In 2016, when the French President resigned from the Ministry of the Economy, the cover of the French newspaper “Lib\u00e9ration” the next day used the neat headline of \u201cMacron, the auto-entrepreneur\u201d, referring to the French system whereby employees are treated similarly to UK sole traders, and obviously playing with the idea that Emmanuel Macron had just become politically \u201cself-employed\u201d. But, incidentally, he had also helped to make this altogether very new expression popular, along with the idea that everybody henceforth may possibly have to \u201cwork for themselves\u201d. <\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The auto-entrepreneur, a response to a changing world…<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

As the world really is changing, so too is the position of salaried workers within it. It used to be that companies took responsibility for the employability of their workers. It was the companies which – mostly – decided what their workers were going to do and how they were going to progress, provided their training, and guaranteed long-term job security. In the model which is slowly developing, it is the employees who are going to take responsibility for both their own sustainable employability, over either successive or parallel contracts whether precarious or otherwise, and for training, whether it be single workshops or vocational courses. Even though they will still be employees, they will be the most active agents in building their own careers. So regardless of their status they are, in a manner of speaking, auto-entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The pros and cons of self-employment?<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The cons?<\/strong> Less security, certainty, stability, comfort, direction, and visibility\u2026<\/p>\n

The pros?<\/strong> More opportunities, freedom, independence, scope, and time to do as you wish.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For, contrary to what some would have us believe, the changing model is not just a reflection of hard times, organisational instability, and job insecurity. It also reflects a higher level of overall maturity in individuals, a greater capacity for independently supporting themselves, and a stronger desire for freedom and personal growth. The recent training reform reflects and encourages all of this by making continuing professional development (known as CPF in France) a personal training account which is controlled by the employee throughout their career, and no longer by their successive employers. It is also shown on another level by highly-qualified young people\u2019s undeniable appetite for start-ups with uncertain futures, rather than established companies which follow paths that are undoubtedly too well-paved.<\/p>\n

Whether you like it or not, self-employment is the future, in whatever form it takes for each individual, the status it assumes, and the companies it affects<\/p>\n

Entrepreneurs, the world is ours…<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is therefore down to us – wherever we are right now – to consider what is at stake, and to accept the consequences.<\/p>\n

Are you an employee? It is up to each of us to take charge, to not expect anything from a company that it is not able to give, to recognise and give the best we have to offer, and to assume responsibility for our own regular professional development…do you work in HR? It is down to dedicated teams to personalise each worker\u2019s prospects, and to come up with new ways to reconcile the motivations of some with the operational requirements of others…are you a manager? It is up to each of us to back the entrepreneurial capacities of our colleagues rather than their subjugation, and to offer everyone opportunities for progression rather than only giving positions to the very best.<\/p>\n

In Maslow\u2019s famous hierarchy of needs, we know that progressing in this way from only satisfying safety needs to also satisfying self-actualization needs is a major achievement a priori, if not the ideal scenario. It is up to us all, each in our own way, to make sure that this freedom is synonymous with satisfaction, expression, innovation, and cooperation – and not just with exploitation or pauperism.<\/p>\n

L'auto-entrepreneur, une r\u00e9ponse au monde qui change...<\/h2>

Le monde est en train de changer, tout comme la position du travailleur salari\u00e9. Autrefois, les entreprises \u00e9taient responsables de l'employabilit\u00e9 de leurs travailleurs. C'\u00e9taient les entreprises qui - la plupart du temps - d\u00e9cidaient de ce que leurs travailleurs allaient faire et comment ils allaient progresser, assuraient leur formation et garantissaient la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l'emploi \u00e0 long terme. Dans le mod\u00e8le qui se d\u00e9veloppe lentement, ce sont les salari\u00e9s qui vont prendre en charge \u00e0 la fois leur propre employabilit\u00e9 durable, sur des contrats successifs ou parall\u00e8les, pr\u00e9caires ou non, et la formation, qu'il s'agisse d'ateliers individuels ou de cours professionnels. M\u00eame s'ils seront toujours des salari\u00e9s, ils seront les agents les plus actifs dans la construction de leur propre carri\u00e8re. Ind\u00e9pendamment de leur statut, ils sont donc, en quelque sorte, des auto-entrepreneurs.<\/p>

Les inconv\u00e9nients et avantages de l'auto-entreprenariat ?<\/h2>

Les inconv\u00e9nients ?<\/strong> Moins de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, de certitude, de stabilit\u00e9, de confort, de direction et de visibilit\u00e9...<\/p>

Les avantages ?<\/strong> Plus d'opportunit\u00e9s, de libert\u00e9, d'ind\u00e9pendance, d'envergure et de temps pour faire ce que l'on veut.<\/p>

Car, contrairement \u00e0 ce que certains voudraient nous faire croire, l'\u00e9volution du mod\u00e8le n'est pas seulement le reflet des temps difficiles, de l'instabilit\u00e9 organisationnelle et de l'ins\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l'emploi. Elle refl\u00e8te \u00e9galement un niveau plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 de maturit\u00e9 g\u00e9n\u00e9rale chez les individus, une plus grande capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 subvenir \u00e0 leurs besoins de mani\u00e8re ind\u00e9pendante, et un d\u00e9sir plus fort de libert\u00e9 et d'\u00e9panouissement personnel. Les diff\u00e9rentes r\u00e9formes de la formation refl\u00e8tent et encouragent tout cela en faisant de la formation professionnelle continue (appel\u00e9e CPF en France) un compte personnel de formation qui est contr\u00f4l\u00e9 par le salari\u00e9 tout au long de sa carri\u00e8re, et non plus par ses employeurs successifs. Elle se manifeste aussi \u00e0 un autre niveau par l'app\u00e9tit ind\u00e9niable des jeunes hautement qualifi\u00e9s pour les start-up \u00e0 l'avenir incertain, plut\u00f4t que pour les entreprises \u00e9tablies qui suivent des chemins sans doute trop bien trac\u00e9s.<\/p>

Qu'on le veuille ou non, le travail ind\u00e9pendant est l'avenir, quelle que soit la forme qu'il prend pour chaque individu, le statut qu'il rev\u00eat et les entreprises qu'il touche.<\/p>

Entrepreneurs, le monde nous appartient...<\/h2>

Il nous appartient donc, o\u00f9 que nous soyons, d'en mesurer les enjeux et d'en assumer les cons\u00e9quences.<\/p>

Vous \u00eates salari\u00e9 ? C'est \u00e0 chacun d'entre nous de se prendre en charge, de ne pas attendre d'une entreprise ce qu'elle n'est pas en mesure de donner, de reconna\u00eetre et de donner le meilleur de nous-m\u00eames, d'assumer la responsabilit\u00e9 de notre d\u00e9veloppement professionnel r\u00e9gulier...<\/p>

Vous travaillez dans les RH ? C'est \u00e0 des \u00e9quipes d\u00e9di\u00e9es qu'il revient de personnaliser les perspectives de chaque travailleur et d'imaginer de nouvelles fa\u00e7ons de concilier les motivations des uns avec les exigences op\u00e9rationnelles des autres...<\/p>

Vous \u00eates manager ? Il appartient \u00e0 chacun d'entre nous de soutenir les capacit\u00e9s entrepreneuriales de nos collaborateurs plut\u00f4t que de les soumettre, et d'offrir \u00e0 tous des possibilit\u00e9s de progression plut\u00f4t que de ne donner des postes qu'aux meilleurs.<\/p>

Dans la fameuse hi\u00e9rarchie des besoins de Maslow<\/a>, nous savons que progresser ainsi de la seule satisfaction des besoins de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 \u00e0 la satisfaction des besoins d'accomplissement de soi est a priori un acquis majeur, sinon le sc\u00e9nario id\u00e9al. Il nous appartient \u00e0 tous, chacun \u00e0 notre mani\u00e8re, de faire en sorte que cette libert\u00e9 soit synonyme de satisfaction, d'expression, d'innovation, de coop\u00e9ration - et non d'exploitation ou de paup\u00e9risme.<\/p>
